Music In American History
Menu
1865-1898
In the years following the Civil War, the music being written and published reflected on the recent victories and losses of the war, which served to celebrate the triumph of the North and to commemorate the sacrifices of the South. Moving into the 1880's, patriotic military marches with lively melodies and inspiring messages became increasingly popular not only in the United States, but throughout the rest of the world as well. Towards the end of the century vaudeville (variety entertainment) music also saw global popularity, especially in Western Europe.
